St. Philip's College was founded as St. Philip's Vocational Day School for Colored Children in 1898 (also known as St. Philip's Parochial Day School) in connection with St. Philip's Church. Under the leadership of Episcopalian Bishop James Steptoe Johnson, the school opened on 1 Mar. 1898 as a sewing class for girls, with fewer than twenty students.
